Melatonin is an indoleamine synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan that is primarily known for its role in regulating the sleep/wake rhythm. Melatonin also affects various physiological activities, such as antioxidation, thermoregulation, immunoregulation, neuroendocrine function, sexual maturation, regulation of seasonal reproduction, and certain aspects of aging.
