The Squirrel

Squirrels are small to medium-sized rodents that are found in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are also found in Australia but were introduced by humans.

Squirrels are primarily herbivores but they have been known to eat chicken eggs and attack and kill chicks and adult bantam hens. This is more likely to happen during early spring, when their usual diet of nuts is unavailable.

How to Prevent Squirrel Attacks

Use proper fencing materials: You must use 1/2-1/4" heavy-duty hardware cloth to enclose the chicken run and any openings in the coop. Do not use poultry wire. It is flimsy and not appropriate for use against any predator. Squirrels can easily chew through it or slip in through the hexagon holes. Trim or remove tree branches: Since squirrels are primarily found around trees, remove or trim nearby tree branches to prevent easy access for the squirrels to get inside the run (if it isn't covered with appropriate hardware cloth). :
