The Coatis

Coatis are opportunistic omnivores found in South and Central America, parts of southwestern US, and Mexico. They are diurnal mammals that are related to the racoon. They are about the size of a house cat and weigh 2.2 – 3.3 pounds (1 – 1.5 kilograms).

They are known to eat eggs and will attack and kill chicks and adult chickens and ducks. They use their paws to open simple coop latches

How to Prevent Coatis Attacks

Use proper fencing material: Build the chicken run and cover any openings in the coop with 1/2" or 1/4" heavy duty hardware cloth. Make sure it is properly secured and covers the encloses the entire run (the top and perimeter). Do not use poultry wire or similar flimsy materials as coatis can easily rip through. Install electric Fencing: Install electric fencing or hot wires around the top and perimeter of the chicken run and coop. If it is solar powered, keep in mind that it may not be effective when its cloudy or during rainy season. Securely lock birds inside the coop at night: Always lock your birds up at night in a coop and use a lock that requires three steps to open. :
