James B. Boutette, DVM

Dr. Boutette joined Evergreen Avian and Exotic in August of 2015. He is originally from Ontario, Canada and graduated from University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Dr. Boutette participated in an internship and residency in avian and exotic medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary College respectively. While a student, Dr. Boutette worked at the American Eagle Foundation and he has since sat on the board of directors of the Freedom Center for Wildlife in New Jersey. He also served as the primary veterinarian for two other wildlife rehabilitation and education centers in South Jersey and near Philadelphia. Dr. Boutette has pursued further education in aquatic medicine, undertaking an intensive course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts. He is an avid aquarist himself.

"Dr Boutette knows birds. He has dedicated his life to saving not just birds but any exotic animal he works with (fish, lizards, turtles). But in this case, he has put so many hours into saving my chickens. He has researched, planned, cared for and when it's been a touchy situation, will take them home to watch them overnight to ensure these animals have 24/7 care. He has NEVER considered euthanasia and has worked his hardest to make sure my girls are given his all. Loxy, my 12 year old girl, had cancer in her wings. He was more concerned she wouldn't make it through the amputation of the wings than the actual amputation. But the surgery was a huge success. She is thriving and you'd never know she was wingless. He's saved Finster, my tiny seabright, when she was egg bound. Twice - two years apart. He refuses to give up on any of these animals, no matter what species and it's because of his genuine love for animals, you'll see an email in your inbox at 2am in the morning, giving you a debrief of his notes on your pet. In a world where poultry vets who actually know what they're doing and do it well, are harder to come by than a four-leaved clover, when you find someone in the veterinary industry who truly does it for the love of the animal, you hold onto them because you know you trust your pet with them ALMOST as much as you trust your pet with you. ALMOST ;). Dr James Boutette's mold was broken when God made him. I just wish everyone who had chickens had the fortune of having one of him. (I actually have tried to get him to do a virtual consult once a week worldwide¦. Perhaps we will one day!) " - Felicia B
