After adopting a bird from the animal shelter, it’s important to follow some precautionary measures to help minimize stress, risk of injury, and disease transfer between all parties involved. Firstly, keep in mind that the animal has recently been through a great deal of stress. For a bird to even end up at an animal shelter, they are more than likely victims of some form of animal cruelty. Next they are exposed to the stressful experience of living in isolation, surrounded by loud barking dogs for anywhere from days to years. Stress is very detrimental on a bird’s immune system, meaning that they will be particularly vulnerable to disease.
