Tramadol hydrochloride (HCl) is a centrally acting opiate analgesic used to treat moderate to severe pain. It has not been well studied in birds. Tramadol is available by prescription only from your veterinarian. It is also a controlled substance, meaning specific paperwork is required for your vet to prescribe it.
Caution: Overdose can cause acute liver failure, seizures, tremors, and mental alterations. Potential side effects include constipation, upset stomach, pupil dilation and panting, and decreased heart rate. Sedation side effects are made worse when used at the same time as antihistamines. Risk for tramadol toxicity is increased when used at the same time as cimetidine, erythromycin, or metoclopramide. Tramadol should not be taken at the same time as SAMe.
