Prednisolone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. It should be used with caution in birds as it can compromise their immune system, increasing the risk of infection with opportunistic pathogens such as
Aspergillus fumigatus.
Caution!
- Prednisolone should not be given concurrently with NSAIDs such as meloxicam and carprofen as it significantly increases the risk of ulcers and internal bleeding.There should be period of at least 24 hours when switching between these medications.
- Prednisolone should not be given with diuretics or amphotericin B as it significantly decreases potassium levels, increasing the risk of development of abnormal heart rhythms.
- Prednisolone should not be given with macrolide antibiotics as they can slow the breakdown of prednisolone, increasing the risk of adverse side effects from the steroid.
Storage
Store at room temperature and definitely below 40° C (104° F). Protect from light using airtight container. A suspension prepared using 50 mg of prednisone powder, 100 mg of sodium benzoate, and a sufficient quantity of simple syrup to bring the volume to 100 mL was stable for 12 weeks at room temperature. Shake well prior to use.
