Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)--specifically eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). PUFAs mediate important cellular function such as inhibition of platelet function, prolongation of bleeding time, anti-inflammatory effects and reduction of plasma fibrinogen.
