Drug Type: Antiemetic

Maropitant

Maropitant citrate is an antiemetic (specifically a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist and substance P inhibitor) that is commonly used to control emesis (nausea) in dogs in cats. It is given off label to birds for it's use in controlling regurgitation or vomiting.

Maropitant citrate is rapidly absorbed in birds following subcutaneous injections


Maropitant citrate should NOT be used in birds who have ingested toxins, under 8 weeks old, or have a gastrointestinal obstruction. It should be used with caution in birds with heart or liver disease.

Storage: The injectable solution should be stored between 20°C and 25°C (68°F-77°F) with excursions between 15°C and 30°C (59°F-86°F) permitted. Once the vial has been punctured, store the injectable in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F-46°F) and use within 90 days. Do not freeze.
