Maryland Avian & Exotics Veterinary Care

Maryland Avian & Exotics Veterinary Care (MAEVC) provides veterinary care to a wide range of different animal species, across the Washington, DC Metro Area. The practice was founded by Dr. Lisa Carr in 2002. She has a particular passion birds and exotic animals.

Lara Backus, DVM

Dr. Backus is from Sewickley, PA. She went to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio for undergrad (Major in Biology, Minor in Music), and obtained her DVM degree from The Ohio State University in 2016. After graduating she completed a rotating internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in 2017, after which she pursued her interest in avian and exotic medicine at a specialized internship at the Center for Bird and Exotic Animal Medicine in Bothell, WA. Dr. Backus has an African Grey Parrot named Lawrence (that she raised from a baby), a corn snake named Bellatrix, one cat named Harley and a Greyhound named Lily. Her hobbies include playing the piano, reading, playing video games, hiking, biking and drawing.

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).

Lisa M. Carr, DVM BVetMed

Dr. Lisa Carr trained internationally at the Royal Veterinary College in London and received her degree in 2003. Her fascination for birds, reptiles and small mammals motivated her to seek specialized training with exotic animals so she completed a residency with Dr. Scott Stahl who is an internationally recognized exotic animal veterinarian. Since completing her residency, she has spent many years providing specialized veterinary care exclusively for exotic pets . When asked about treating dogs or cats she reminds people to leave those species to the "experts." Before opening MAEVC, Dr. Carr opened and ran the exotics department in a referral and specialty practice in the area where she gained more experience in managing emergency cases, specialized surgery and endoscopy. She got to work with many brilliant veterinarians in their specialty areas and learned how to apply it to her exotic patients.
